first shirt habergeon

First Shirt: Habergeon

This was my first seriously big project.  A shirt of this style, short-sleeved and extending to waist length, is called a habergeon.  This one is neither particularly authentic nor terribly battle-worthy.  However, it does take a lot of work to finish anything close to this size, and so it is fairly efficient at impressing everyone who sees it.

It features patches of kingsmaille on the shoulders, mainly to reinforce the weak rings, and because I think it just looks better that way.  It also has bronze trim, which, because I didn't really know what I was doing when I made it, is in rings 1/16" smaller than the steel in the rest of the shirt.  (hhmmm...)

Let's see, what else...The ubiquitous questions are, of course, "How much does it weigh?" "How long did it take?" and "How do you even do that?"  Answers:
  • It weighs about 10 lbs (so this one is a lightweight -- most weigh 30+)
  • It took some three months to do the main body; the sleeves, added later, were maybe another week.
  • Weeellllll...look here.
